The museum directs and supports local museum activities and the care of cultural heritage in Ostrobothnia, supervising, among other things, the use of grants from the Finnish Heritage Agency.
In the area of the Ostrobothnia region, the regional museum duties are carried out by the Ostrobothnian Museum, which is part of the Vaasa Museums. The regional museum’s tasks include, among other things, guiding, developing and supporting museum activities as well as the care and preservation of cultural heritage and cultural environments in Ostrobothnia in accordance with a plan made with the Finnish Heritage Agency.
There are over 100 museums in Ostrobothnia, most of which are local heritage and open-air museums run by volunteers, but there are also specialised museums and collections of cultural history. The Provincial Curator advises on local museum work in their area and promotes cooperation between the region’s museums. The provincial museum maintains the Ostrobothnian Museum Portal and the portal’s Facebook page as well as the Kapsäkki blog.
The Provincial Curator provides advice on issues related to the recording, cataloguing, conservation and care of collections, the maintenance and repair of museum buildings and sites, funding, as well as exhibitions and public engagement. The Provincial Curator also acts as an expert in projects related to the history of their area and, where necessary, participates in official duties concerning cultural environments.
The Provincial Curator advises on and issues statements regarding applications for local museum grants to the Finnish Heritage Agency and supervises their use.
Contact the Provincial Curator for more information about local museum activities.
The problems faced by small local museums are often similar, which is why it is important to develop cooperation between museums. The museum with regional responsibility organises training for museum associations in cooperation with other actors, for example in the form of regional museum days or training events. Others interested in the topic may also participate in the training.
The regional museum with responsibility has published the Kapsäkki magazine, which is the information bulletin for museum affairs in Ostrobothnia and contains articles in the fields of art, natural sciences and history. The magazine now exists in blog form. Older issues of the Kapsäkki magazine can be read via the links provided.
You can access the Kapsäkki blog here.

The purpose of the museum day is to showcase the diverse museums and voluntary local heritage work of Ostrobothnia to the general public, the media, decision-makers and tourists. In Southern Ostrobothnia, a regional museum day has been successfully held for several years. Last year the day was also organised in Ostrobothnia and it was a popular event.
