Regional operations

Vaasa Museums acts as the museum with regional responsibility for the Ostrobothnia region.

The core tasks of the museum with regional responsibility are regional art museum activity, provincial museum activity, and work related to the cultural environment (cultural landscapes, archaeological remains, and built heritage). The museum is responsible for, among other things, official duties concerning the cultural environment and promotes local and regional art museum activities within the region. The museum’s operations are based on the Museum Act (314/2019).

The aim of the activity is to promote visual arts, provide advice and expert assistance in the management of art collections, and support municipalities, cultural institutions and private actors on art matters.

Traces of human activity from prehistory to the present are preserved in cooperation with the Finnish Heritage Agency.

The museum guides and supports local museum activities as well as the preservation of cultural heritage in Ostrobothnia by supervising, among other things, the use of grants from the Finnish Heritage Agency.

Your home and workplace are part of our shared built cultural environment. The core tasks of the museum’s work regarding the cultural environment include preserving and documenting landscapes, buildings, construction methods, and building skills, as well as sharing information about them.
