Archaeological cultural heritage

Traces of human activity from prehistory to the present are preserved in cooperation with the Finnish Heritage Agency.

Ancient remains are traces of human activity preserved in the environment from the Stone Age to the present, and this heritage is protected by the Ancient Monuments Act.

Vaasa Museums operates as the regional museum responsible for Ostrobothnia and is responsible for protecting our region’s archaeological cultural heritage in cooperation with the Finnish Heritage Agency. A significant part of the archaeological field’s tasks consists of administrative archaeology related to land use and official duties. In Ostrobothnia the provincial archaeologist participates, for example, in guidance related to land use planning, earthworks and forestry.

Activities concerning ancient remains require a permit and plans relating to them must be based on up-to-date information. You can find recorded ancient monuments and other archaeological sites in the cultural environment service window maintained by the Finnish Heritage Agency: cultural environment service window.

From the Finnish Heritage Agency’s website you can find, among other things, guidelines for the protection of archaeological cultural heritage and information on, for example, maintenance grants for ancient monument areas: maintenance grants for ancient monument areas.

Please consult the Finnish Heritage Agency’s guidelines, especially if you use a metal detector! The Finnish Heritage Agency’s notification and return service is called Ilppari.
