The goal of the activity is to promote visual arts activity, provide advice and expert assistance in the management of art collections, and to support municipalities, cultural institutions and private actors in matters relating to art.
Regional responsibility museum tasks include activating visual arts activities, documenting contemporary art and visual art phenomena, and providing various services related to visual arts in the Ostrobothnia region. The museum advises and provides expert assistance on art-related matters to the municipalities of Ostrobothnia, cultural institutions and communities, as well as to private individuals.
Advice and expert assistance cover, for example, cataloguing, inventorying and care of art collections. The museum also provides guidance on information retrieval and copyright issues. The museum does not provide services related to the identification, authenticity or valuation of artworks; such information is recommended to be sought from reliable art and auction sources.
The museum also has a regional art archive, established in the 1990s. The regional art archive stores information about artists, art operators, art or art life from Ostrobothnia. Archiving has focused on documenting Ostrobothnian visual culture and visual folk culture, and in particular the distinctive features that differ from other regions.
For matters concerning the regional art archive, contact the Regional Art Curator silvia.rinne@vaasa.fi.
Responsibility museum tasks also cover public art, such as memorials, statues and commemorative plaques. Vaasa Museums, in cooperation with the City of Vaasa’s Cultural Services, have prepared the City of Vaasa’s process description for procuring public art, the aim of which is to create common practices between the city’s various units for implementing and maintaining public art and to serve as a guide for the municipalities of Ostrobothnia in procuring and caring for public art.
The museum organises 1–2 travelling exhibitions each year, which can be loaned free of charge to libraries, schools or various cultural institutions in Ostrobothnia. Our museums have a total of five loanable “Museum in a Suitcase” packages, which allow a museum visit to be brought, for example, into a classroom. The suitcases contain images and objects that introduce the museums’ collections, art history, the history of Vaasa and marine animals. The contents can be adapted for different age groups. The museum also offers art workshops based on the suitcase exhibitions.
The museum offers advice on preventative conservation and collection care. The advice concerns the collections of municipalities, parishes and local heritage museums in the responsibility area as well as public artworks such as statues, memorials, sculptures and murals. The museums do not provide conservation services. If needed, contact details for private conservators can be provided.
The museum organises training in collection care for cultural organisations in Ostrobothnia as needed.
Statues and memorials of Ostrobothnia
The City of Vaasa has published a map application that locates the memorials and statues of Ostrobothnia on a map. The application already includes about 190 statues, memorials and works of art from Vaasa, Laihia and Kaskinen. Over the next four years, the application will be expanded to include sites from all municipalities in Ostrobothnia. Information about the statues and memorials is collected in cooperation with municipal cultural actors and local heritage volunteers.
You can explore the application here. More resources on Vaasa’s public sculptures, memorials and art sites can be found on the Vaasa before and now blog and on the Rojekti X site. Mapping the sites promotes knowledge of public artworks.
Kapsäkki – the cultural blog of the regional responsibility museum of Ostrobothnia
The blog covers topics related to local Ostrobothnian culture, history, art, built cultural environments, archaeology and nature. Contributors include staff from the Vaasa Museums, actors from local heritage museums and associations, experts from different fields, and people interested in Ostrobothnian culture who want to share their knowledge and thoughts with readers.
If you would like to write an article for the museum blog, contact the Regional Art Curator at silvia.rinne@vaasa.fi
Museum portal
The four-language Ostrobothnia museum portal maintained by the City of Vaasa’s museums contains core information about museums and art galleries in Ostrobothnia and, to some extent, also in South Ostrobothnia.
