TaiKon offers basic education in the arts for children and youngsters aged 4–18. You can study visual arts, dance, theatre, circus arts, media arts and crafts on a long-term basis. The hobby provides children and youngsters with experiences of success, new friends and artistic experiences.

TaiKon provides basic education in the arts following the general syllabus in crafts, media art, circus arts and theatre. The extended syllabus is offered in visual arts and dance (ballet and contemporary dance). TaiKon’s basic education in the arts is part of the activities of the Alma Adult Education Centre.

Our activities take place in the Vaasa Barracks area and in the dance halls of Kuula Institute. The teaching groups usually meet once a week in the afternoons or evenings. For dance studies, classes are held 1–3 times a week depending on the group. Teaching is provided by trained arts professionals and artists with a pedagogical orientation.

Previous experience or special talent are not required to begin studies. The studies develop creativity, expressive skills and the ability to work persistently. They also provide a good foundation for later studies in professional arts education or higher education.

Structure and scope of studies

TaiKon offers instruction according to the extended syllabus in visual arts and dance (ballet and contemporary dance). The calculated extent of the extended syllabus is 1,300 hours, of which the basic studies account for 800 hours and the advanced studies account for 500 hours. For calculation purposes, one lesson equals 45 minutes.

The purpose of the basic studies of the extended syllabus is the goal-oriented practice and long-term development of skills central to the art field. The aim of the advanced studies is to broaden study opportunities and they include a final project.

Basic arts education is provided according to the general syllabus in crafts, media art, circus arts and theatre. The calculated extent of the general syllabus is 500 hours, of which the shared studies account for 300 hours and the theme studies account for 200 hours. For calculation purposes, one lesson equals 45 minutes.

The purpose of the general syllabus’s shared studies is to acquire the basic skills of the art field. The aim of the theme studies is to expand the knowledge acquired in the shared studies.

TaiKon also organizes early childhood education that precedes basic studies and shared studies. In the visual arts subjects, the instruction is visual arts and crafts education (Visual Arts–Crafts mix). In the performing arts, the instruction is early childhood education in theatre, dance and circus (Theatre–Dance–Circusmix and Dancemix).

Early childhood studies are not included in the calculated extent of the general or extended syllabus and early childhood studies are not a prerequisite for starting basic or shared studies.
