Stormwater management

Stormwater (rain and meltwater) collects, for example, on yards, streets and roofs. It also includes foundation drainage water from buildings. The City of Vaasa is responsible for stormwater management in areas covered by a local detailed plan. The aim is to safely direct water away from built-up areas and to prevent floods and the damage they cause.

How is stormwater managed?

Stormwater is conveyed and managed using the city’s stormwater system. The system includes, for example:

  • stormwater sewers
  • open ditches
  • pumping stations
  • retention structures (structures that slow down water flow)
  • basins and ponds
  • other structures and equipment related to stormwater management

The City of Vaasa’s Public Utility Services plans, builds and maintains the stormwater system in areas covered by a local detailed plan.

Responsibilities of the city and the property owner

City:

  • organises stormwater management in areas covered by a local detailed plan
  • prevents floods and mitigates flood damage on its own areas (streets, parks and other public areas)
  • ensures the functionality of networks and the continuity of critical services also during flood events
  • supports rescue operations during floods

As a property owner or holder you must:

  • take care of stormwater management on your own plot
  • prevent flood damage through your own actions
  • prepare for flood situations and necessary protective measures
