Suvilahti and Korkeamäki

Suvilahti and Korkeamäki are pleasant residential areas close to the centre of Vaasa. Suvilahti is known for its diverse leisure opportunities, while Korkeamäki combines peaceful living with an excellent location near services and sports facilities.

Suvilahti

Housing construction in Suvilahti (Sunnanvik) began in 1969, and the area served as Vaasa’s housing fair area in 2008. Suvilahti has been designed with residential comfort in mind: motor vehicle traffic is kept as far away from the housing as possible, and there are separate routes for active transportation.

An active Suvilahti Association operates in Suvilahti, organising, among other things, winter festivities, ski and cross-country running competitions, and community cleaning events.

There is a variety of outdoor opportunities in Suvilahti. You can go for runs on trails and the beautiful shoreline roads, in winter you can ski and spend time outdoors on the ice, and there is a fenced dog park to have fun with your pet.

Nearby are also an ice rink, Vaasan Sähkö Arena and Kaarlenkenttä sports centre for athletics. The hockey team Vaasan Sport plays at Vaasan Sähkö Areena in the Finnish professional hockey league SM‑liiga.

Korkeamäki

Korkeamäki (Högbacken), means High Hill and is named after the highest hill on Rantamaantie. The area is located close to Vaasa city centre and offers peaceful living without through traffic.

Korkeamäki consists of two distinct parts: an apartment block area on the city side and a detached housing area built in phases.

The different parts of the detached housing area were built in the 1950s and 1960s, and they represent the building style of their era well. The area’s strengths are:

  • proximity to the city centre, yet a peaceful location
  • varied sports and exercise facilities nearby
  • a green environment, gardens and nature
  • a compact and diverse community of residents

Korkeamäki has the Korkeamäki residents’ association, and the cat house Kissatalo has a branch office in the area.
