Multilingual children in early childhood education and care

Language proficiency develops through learning and teaching as well as through interaction and play with others. In language teaching, all everyday situations are used as effectively as possible (language-aware practice).

The aim is that the child:

  • learns to understand the language
  • is encouraged to produce speech
  • learns to use language as a tool for communication (interaction) and for influencing others
  • achieves at least functional multilingualism and is able to be a fully integrated member of the group.

The child’s progress in Finnish language skills is monitored and supported. The language is taught in a planned manner.

An essential part of S2 instruction is also supporting the child’s own mother tongue and culture in cooperation with guardians.
