Promoting walking and cycling

Vaasa continuously develops cycling conditions. The city invests in high-quality main routes, safe intersection arrangements, bicycle parking and winter maintenance so that cycling is smooth in all seasons. Promoting cycling is an important part of Vaasa’s goal to build a more pleasant, healthier and more sustainable city.

Bicycle parking action plan

The bicycle parking action plan guides the development of bicycle parking in Vaasa. The aim is to provide safe, high-quality and easily accessible bicycle parking spaces at key destinations. According to the plan, the city will increase the number of frame-lockable bike racks, improve covered parking options and gradually replace old racks with modern solutions.

Audit and prioritisation model for the traffic safety of pedestrian and cycle routes

Vaasa’s audit and prioritisation model for the traffic safety of pedestrian and cycle routes is a tool for identifying the most important development targets from a traffic safety perspective. The model assesses the safety of routes and intersections using consistent criteria and prioritises measures based on their impact, urgency and cost-effectiveness.

The aim of the model is to direct investments where they improve the safety of walking and cycling the most. It supports the city’s long-term planning and helps build a safer, smoother and more attractive environment to move in for people of all ages.

Smart school travel project

The City of Vaasa promotes safe, health-promoting and sustainable school journeys by improving walking and cycling conditions through data-driven management. In the Smart school travel project, the city’s school routes have been mapped, the potential for walking and cycling at schools has been assessed and the most important development needs for school journeys have been identified.

The material produced in the project helps target measures where they will have the greatest effect. Development takes into account, among other things, the traffic safety of school routes, bicycle parking, drop-off traffic, winter maintenance and the attractiveness of walking and cycling. The goal is to increase active school travel among children and young people and to make school journeys safe and smooth throughout the year.

Vaasa’s IoT model

Vaasa’s IoT model utilises smart sensor technology and real-time data in the development of walking and cycling. The system collects information on, for example, cyclist and pedestrian numbers, enabling changes in mobility to be monitored reliably and the effects of development measures to be evaluated based on data.

IoT solutions support the city’s decision-making, the targeting of investments and the promotion of sustainable mobility. The goal is to build an even safer, smoother and more attractive walking and cycling network for the residents of Vaasa.

Construction of pedestrian and cycle paths

Vaasa develops the walking and cycling network in a long-term manner within the limits of the annually available investment budget. Construction emphasizes the renovation of existing routes as well as the construction of new, safe and high-quality pedestrian and cycle paths. In addition, traffic safety at intersections and pedestrian crossings will be improved.

The goal of the development is to improve the safety, smoothness and accessibility of routes. Special attention is paid to implementing separated pedestrian and cycle paths on the busiest routes, which increases traffic safety and makes getting around more pleasant for all user groups.
