The HALI system automatically switches traffic lights to green for emergency vehicles
The HALI traffic light system gives emergency vehicles priority at traffic lights. The system is used on the rescue service’s emergency routes, including Vaasanpuistikko, Hietalahdenkatu and at Onkilahti.
The HALI system always automatically switches the traffic lights to green when an ambulance or fire engine on an emergency response approaches an intersection. The function is based on positioning via satellite and wireless data transmission. Other devices in the rescue vehicles are also used in the control; for example, by using the warning lights the need for traffic light changes at crossing roads can be anticipated.
HALI control starts when a rescue vehicle sets off on an emergency response. The traffic lights show green in the vehicle’s direction of travel and red on crossing roads. When the emergency vehicle has passed the traffic lights, the traffic lights return to normal based on the position information.
