Is Strömsö real?
Yes – it is! And best of all – Strömsö isn’t just a place you’ve seen on TV or Yle Areena. The idyllic filming location really exists, and you’ll find it in Vaasa!

Strömsö is one of Svenska Yle’s best-known lifestyle programmes. The first episode aired in 2002, and over the years, the programme has become familiar to millions of Finns. Strömsö is also broadcast in Sweden and Norway.
The programme is all about cooking, gardening, DIY projects, crafts and trying out new ideas – always with a relaxed approach and a positive spirit. At Strömsö, everything famously seems to go according to plan. This has even inspired a well-known Finnish saying, “It didn’t quite go like at Strömsö”, used when things don’t turn out quite as expected.
Since autumn 2025, Strömsö has no longer had a regular broadcast slot. Instead, Yle produces a few longer Strömsö specials, which can be watched live or later on Yle Areena. Read more about Strömsö on Yle’s website.
Strömsö is a real place!
And best of all – Strömsö isn’t just a place you’ve seen on TV or Yle Areena. The idyllic filming location really exists, and you’ll find it in Vaasa!
Built in 1852, the villa is located in Västervik, approximately 10 kilometres from Vaasa city centre, and is still used as the filming location for Strömsö. You can explore the villa on guided tours or by booking a private group visit.
The beautiful surroundings of Strömsö, including its beaches, are also a popular destination for both locals and visitors. The park grounds are always open to visitors, and on a summer’s day, you can even enjoy a family cycling trip to Strömsö.
In addition to travelling by car, you can also reach Strömsö by Vaasa’s local buses.
Strömsö also hosts various themed days and events. For the latest updates, follow Strömsö on Yle Areena and Instagram @ylestromso.
