Vaasa’s birdlife

Welcome to explore Vaasa’s breeding birdlife.

Finland’s breeding bird fauna currently includes 240–250 bird species. The development of the breeding bird population is monitored both through national Bird Atlas surveys and locally as part of land use nature impact assessments. Both professionals and active hobbyists participate in collecting bird data. Nearly one third of the bird species breeding in Finland are classified as threatened, and several species are at risk of extinction. Surveys allow timely responses to negative changes in bird populations and preventive measures, such as improving habitat quality or establishing protected areas.

These pages present Vaasa’s breeding birdlife in more detail and provide tips on which kinds of habitats different species can be observed in. Vaasa’s breeding bird fauna comprises over 160 species. The number of species is constantly developing as new species settle in the area. Bird observations from the Vaasa area can be viewed, for example, on the Finnish Species Information Centre’s laji.fi pages or on BirdLife Finland’s Tiira bird information service. You can report your own bird observations on the same sites or, for example, via the Mobiilivihko app.
