The Vaasa region is one of the most multilingual and multicultural areas in Finland. Internationality can be seen in everyday life in many ways. You encounter it at workplaces, schools and daycare centres, in hobbies and in the streetscape.
The number of international residents has grown rapidly in the 2000s. In the Vaasa region nearly a hundred different languages are spoken, and around 120 nationalities are represented. The City of Vaasa’s statistics also include groups of fewer than ten people.
You can also find map data related to the population and population figures in the “Municipal regional information and service areas” section.
Population. The indicator shows the number of permanent residents in the area at the end of the year (31 Dec.).
Population projection. The population projection is based on scenarios prepared by MDI. More about the scenarios and the underlying assumptions: www.mdi.fi/vaestoennuste/
Share of working-age population. The indicator shows the share of 15–64-year-olds of the population in the area.
Age structure. The indicator describes the population’s age structure in five-year age groups in the most recent statistical year compared to the year 2000.
Foreign-language speakers. The indicator shows the share of foreign-language speakers of the population; this includes persons whose mother tongue is something other than Finnish, Swedish or Sámi.
Number of foreign nationalities. The indicator shows the total number of nationalities. NOTE! For privacy reasons, the nationality of groups of less than 10 persons cannot be presented. For this reason, the actual number of nationalities is larger than the recorded number. If a person has dual-nationality status, one of which is Finnish, he or she is counted as a Finnish citizen in the statistics.
