Community climate actions

Read about the climate actions the City of Vaasa has implemented together with different communities or companies.

Collaboration is powerful

The City of Vaasa invests in community climate actions where residents, communities and companies can participate in mitigating climate change. The aim of these measures is to increase awareness, commitment and concrete actions to achieve a more sustainable future.

Community climate actions

The City of Vaasa has created the Vaasa Climate Commitment, which encourages organisations, communities and companies operating in the Vaasa area to set sustainability targets and take concrete steps towards a climate-positive future.

You can read more about the commitment on the Vaasa Climate Commitment page.

In Vaasa, an energy education pathway is being implemented that extends from Early Childhood Education and Care to higher education. One important goal of the City of Vaasa’s strategy 2026–2030 is Carbon-neutral Vaasa 202X. Our aim is to be Finland’s most energy-wise and energy-efficient city.

In Basic Education the energy theme is addressed from various perspectives. Different year levels cover content appropriate to the age and subject objectives. In lower grades the energy topic is explored, for example, through energy saving, environmental protection and food production. In upper grades the topic is examined more broadly, for example energy production in the Vaasa region and visits to companies.

A state special grant has been awarded to the City of Vaasa’s Basic Education for climate and sustainability education. In the Inspiring Energy to Schools project, sustainability education in schools is supported by developing learning environments, producing materials, learning content and learning modules to support teaching in cooperation with actors outside the school. The project produces bilingual materials, learning content and learning modules to support teaching. The project runs until the end of 2024.

Resident-energised Vaasa – towards a sustainable city with resident energy. Vaasa’s strategic goal is to be carbon-neutral in the 2020s. In the Resident-energised Vaasa project, funded by the Ministry of the Environment, the resident-led nature and inclusion of the city’s sustainability work was strengthened by implementing the ideas of Vaasa residents for a more sustainable urban life. Resident participation promotes a fair and socially sustainable green transition. Project duration 1.1.2022 – 31.5.2023.

In the Resident-energised Vaasa project a challenge was offered to students on how they would promote sustainable urban life in Vaasa. The Student Union of the University of Vaasa (VYY) took up the challenge by organising a Student second hand flea market event for all higher education students. The event was sponsored by the Resident-energised Vaasa project and was held at Culture House Fanny on 4.4.2023.

In spring 2022, at the residents’ request, the project established a raised-bed garden in Ristinummi. The gardening activities support the integration of immigrants and the circular economy. The municipalities’ waste management company Ab Stormossen Oy sponsored the soils for the raised beds, which were produced by composting the bio-waste of Vaasa households and grocery stores. Thus the nutrients from discarded bio-waste are returned to the cycle and the cultivated plants grow vigorously in nutrient-rich, locally produced soil. Participants in the trial are provided with guidance on how everyone can promote sustainable circular economy by recycling correctly.
